The Four (4) C's of Diamonds Color - The color of a Diamond is measured on a scale from D-Z. It is noted that a Diamond does not begin to show a yellowish tint until it reaches the color I and below. D color stones are rare and G-H colored stones are most common. Cut - A well cut diamond, also known as Ideal Cut, enables light to reflect off of each facet directly back to the viewers eye. If a diamond is cut to thick or shallow, light can escape, or be reflected away from the eye, thus decreasing the visual effect of a Diamond. Full cut diamonds have a total of 58 facets and include a table, girdle, crown, pavilion, star, and culet. Clarity - The fewer the blemishes and flaws in a diamond, the more brilliant the diamond. Of course, the higher the clarity, the higher the price. F - Flawless diamonds are extremely rare. The most Common clarities on the market range from SI (slightly imperfected under a 10x glass) to VS (very slightly imperfected). A diamond in the VS to SI range is considered clean to the naked eye and will reflect light well, both enhancing the brilliance and sparkle of the diamond. Carat - Diamond weight is measured in carats. 100 points is also known as 1 carat. Therefore, a half carat diamond weights 50 points, or .50ct. Keep in mind that although size matters, the Four (4) C's should be considered when making a decision on purchasing a diamond. Consider the fact that a smaller, yet cleaner diamond, will shine much brighter than one twice it's size. Better color may be needed when using white gold or platinum. And the naked eye will not tell the difference between a VS1 or VS2 stone. There is no science in purchasing a diamond, it's all about finding the right stone for you. |
